By: Joseph T. Burns

On May 6, 2025, the Elections Committee of the New York State Senate will meet to consider 11 bills.  Among the proposals under consideration by the Elections Committee are bills to:

  • Alter the process for removing a county elections commissioner (S.570);
  • Establish minimum staffing requirements for local boards of elections (S.843);
  • Require county elections commissioners to meet certain qualifications prior to their appointment (S.5452); and
  • Amend the 2026 political calendar so that the period for filing designating petitions does not interfere with Passover (S.6996).

Additionally, the Elections Committee will consider bills sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt and Sen. Mark Walczyk, the Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Elections Committee, to require voters to show valid government-issued photo identification when voting (S.2574 and S.1885, respectively).

Finally, the Elections Committee will hear presentations from the Attorney General’s Office and New York State Board of Elections Commissioner Anthony Casale.

We will continue to monitor the bills considered by the Senate Elections Committee and provide updates when appropriate.
