NY Governor Calls Special Elections to Fill Vacancies in the State Legislature

By: Joseph T. Burns

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has called special elections to fill four vacancies in the state legislature.  The special elections for all four seats will take place on February 3, 2026.

Two of these vacancies are in the State Assembly, and two are in the State Senate.  All four of these vacancies were caused by the resignations of state legislators who had been elected to local office at the 2025 General Election.  This includes new New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and new Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan.

Candidates running in these special elections are eligible to participate in the state public campaign finance program.
