New York State Senate Begins 2026 by Passing Election Proposals
By: Joseph T. Burns
The New York State Senate began its 2026 session by approving a package of bills amending the state Election Law. Since taking the majority in 2019, it has become a practice of the Democratic leaders of the Senate to begin each year by considering and voting on election proposals.
Among the bills approved on Monday by the Senate are:
- S.568, a bill allowing local Boards of Elections to establish portable early voting locations;
- S.1035, a proposal to establish a mandatory training program for commissioners and employees of local Boards of Elections; and
- S.8604, a bill moving New York State’s presidential primary to “Super Tuesday.”
Consideration of any of these proposals by the State Assembly has not yet been scheduled.
We will continue to monitor these and other bills under consideration by the New York State Legislature during the 2026 session and provide updates when appropriate.
