New York State Board of Elections Approves 2026 Legislative Program
By: Joseph T. Burns
At a meeting held on February 12, 2026, the New York State Board of Elections (NYSBOE) approved its legislative proposals for the 2026 state legislative session. Among the legislative initiatives that will be pushed by the NYSBOE are:
- A requirement that poll workers arrive at the poll site one hour – instead of the current half hour – before the opening of polls;
- A training requirement for new county election commissioners;
- A requirement that sample ballots be posted on Board of Elections websites at least twelve days before an election; and
- A requirement that an LLC ownership attribution be filed within one week of the LLC’s first contribution.
It is expected that the NYSBOE will advocate on behalf of these proposals during the 2026 state legislative session. The 2026 session began in January and is scheduled to conclude in June.
The NYSBOE is a bipartisan agency within the Executive Department of New York State government. It was established in 1974. Four commissioners – two Republican and two Democratic – lead the NYSBOE, and two co-executive directors – one Republican and one Democratic – run the NYSBOE’s day-to-day operations.
We will monitor the progress of the NYSBOE’s 2026 legislative proposals and provide updates when appropriate.
